Matterhorn Bobsleds at Disneyland - 53th Anniversary

Jun 14, 1959
Matterhorn Bobsleds Opens at Disneyland

Yodelay he hoo! On this day in 1959, Disneyland’s Matterhorn opened to the public, giving Guests the opportunity to ride down the icy slopes of the majestic mountain in bobsleds. In 1958, when Walt Disney was on location in Switzerland, he saw the Matterhorn and knew he wanted that in Disneyland, where anything is possible. The Matterhorn, was built to 1/100th scale of the original size, complete with real trees grown in the Rocky Mountains. The Matterhorn Bobsleds have their placed carved out in roller coaster history as being the first coaster built on round tubular tracks, as well as having a unique ride control system to become the first to have more than one coaster on the track at a time. The original name Matterhorn is derived from the words “matte” meaning “meadow” and “horn” meaning peak. And speaking of translations, this attraction taught millions of people how to say, “Remain seated, please” in Spanish, “Permanecer sentados, por favor.”

Club 33 at Disneyland - Picture Tour

Club 33 at Disneyland Park

Club 33 is a mystery that any Disneyland fan who has not experienced it ponders with each visit to New Orleans Square.

The History

"According to Disneyland Food and Beverage General Manager Matt Gray, Walt Disney was attempting to attract new sponsors for Disneyland park while he was at the New York World’s Fair in 1964. He noticed the fair had executive lounges for corporate sponsors and felt that Disneyland should offer similar amenities. He envisioned an exclusive setting – elegant, featuring fine cuisine and a uniquely Disney atmosphere. Matt says that it was actually one of the Disneyland sponsors who suggested that club invites be extended to select individuals.

In April 1966, Walt and Lillian Disney travelled to New Orleans with designer Emile Kuri, who had decorated the sets of “Mary Poppins” and “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” to select many of the beautiful antiques which would be featured in the club. The club opened at number 33 Royal Street in New Orleans Square on June 15, 1967 – sadly, six months after Walt Disney passed away. It would go on to be known as Club 33 – the most exclusive address in all of Disneyland."

“Our biggest challenge,” says Matt, “is living up to the expectations that our guests have built up in their heads from years of hearing about what is behind the door.”

Victorian-Age, French-Style Lift at Club 33

Club 33 includes two dining rooms and several adjoining areas, all of which hold a variety of antiques and original works of art. After ascending to the second floor in the unique Victorian-age, French-style lift – a reproduction of one Walt had admired during a trip to Europe – you enter The Gallery. Here you’ll find an oak telephone booth with beveled leaded glass panels adapted from the one used in the Disney motion picture “The Happiest Millionaire” and a rare console table which was found in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Also in The Gallery are original works by Disney artists and design studies for New Orleans Square and the Pirates of the Caribbean.

Lounge Alley

In Lounge Alley, you’ll find a beautiful harpsichord – one of the results of the “shopping” trip to New Orleans. It features a scene showing Jackson Square and the Mississippi River in the 19th Century, hand-painted by WED artist Collin Campbell.

The Main Dining Room

The Main Dining Room is decorated in First Empire style, recalling the era of Napoleon and the early 19th Century. The room, decorated with framed artwork by Disney artists, is lit by wall sconces and three chandeliers. Fresh flowers, parquet floors and antique bronzes create an atmosphere of serenity and warmth.

The Trophy Room

The Disney Room, or Trophy Room, is the second dining room. It was originally to be the setting for a show featuring five Audio-Animatronics figures: two magpies, an owl, a raccoon and a vulture who would entertain the guests and even participate in their conversations through the use of microphones which were hidden in the chandeliers above each table. The show never developed, however, and today only the vulture remains on his perch in the corner of the room.

Visit... Carousel of Progress

The Carousel of Progress first premiered at the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. The show then moved to Disneyland, where it opened as part of a new Tomorrowland. In 1973, Carousel of Progress relocated to its current home here in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, where it continues to entertain guests from around the globe.

Walt and Lillian’s 30th wedding anniversary- A Unique Anniversary Party

A Unique Anniversary Party

posted [Official Disney Parks Blog] on February 8th, 2010 by Heather Hust Rivera, Manager, Social Media, Disneyland Resort

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it seemed like a good time to share a photo I recently saw for the first time. It’s from a unique anniversary party of two sweethearts: Walt and Lillian Disney. They are photographed with their daughters, Diane and Sharon, around a huge cake inside the yet-to-be-opened Golden Horseshoe on July 13, 1955, just four days before the official opening of Disneyland park.

Walt and Lillian Disney's Anniversary Party

It was the ultimate celebration. Three hundred guests were invited to celebrate Walt and Lillian’s 30th wedding anniversary. Invitees included Spencer Tracy, Cary Grant and Gary Cooper. Can you imagine getting this invitation?
WHERE: Disneyland . . . where there’s plenty of room . . .
WHEN: . . . Wednesday, July 13, 1955, at six o’clock in the afternoon . . .
WHY: . . . because we’ve been married Thirty Years . . .
HOW: . . . by cruising down the Mississippi on the Mark Twain’s maiden voyage, followed by dinner at Slue-Foot-Sue’s Golden Horseshoe!
Hope you can make it – we especially want you and, by the way, no gifts, please – we have everything, including a grandson.
Lilly and Walt
If you’ve haven’t heard the story, party guests piled into horse-drawn surreys and were taken down Main Street and into Frontierland where they boarded the Mark Twain Riverboat and sipped mint juleps. At the Golden Horseshoe Saloon (as it was called then), guests were treated to the very first, but unofficial, performance of the Golden Horseshoe Revue, created by Wally Boag, the original Pecos Bill.

Next time you visit Frontierland, step inside the Golden Horseshoe and imagine what that anniversary party might have been like nearly 55 years ago.
